In this busy world, our experiences of happiness are fleeting and short-lived, while inner peace eludes us completely. Our negative states of mind, such as uncontrolled desire and anger, create endless problems for ourselves and others and prevent us from fulfilling our deepest wishes. Buddha’s popular teaching on the Four Noble Truths offers a clear and simple solution, guiding us to an oasis of peace within our hearts.

Oct 16: The power of the mind
Oct 23: Where does our happiness and suffering come from?
Oct 30: Letting go: free your mind

The meditation classes explain Buddhist meditation, ideas, and practice. They combine guided meditation with practical spiritual advice that you can apply immediately to relieve stress and solve problems in your life. Everyone is welcome. The classes are suitable for both beginners and more experienced meditators.

We want to be happy all the time, even during sleep. How can we do this? We can do this through training in meditation, which makes our mind peaceful. When our mind is peaceful, we are happy all the time, regardless of our external circumstances.

Meditation may seem difficult, but it becomes easier and more focused when we rely upon Buddha’s authentic meditation instructions.

In order to improve the power of our meditations, we need to assemble a toolkit of specific mental skills. In this course, we will look at how to prepare properly for meditation, how to engage in analytical meditation to find our object of meditation, how to use mindfulness and alertness to keep our mind focused on the object and how to prevent distractions and dullness from destroying the strength of our meditation. We will also look at simple, yet profound meditations which will help us develop and maintain a peaceful mind.

Each class is self-contained; however, you will receive the most benefit if you attend all classes! There will be an opportunity to ask questions in each class. Everybody welcome!

Week 1 Nov 6: Learning to actually meditate: Cutting distractions

Week 2 Nov 13: Clarity: the mind, and why we need to understand this.

Week 3 Nov 20: The Root Mind: learning to meditate from the heart.

Week 4 Nov 27: Cherishing Others: deepening our experience.

Week 5 Dec 4: Taking Away Suffering

Week 6 Dec 11: Giving Happiness
