Chanted Prayers

Chanted prayers are essentially guided meditations that are directed to increasing our love, compassion and wisdom. By focusing on the meaning of these prayers while we chant them, we gain deep spiritual insights, or realizations, that will bring us deep inner peace and happiness. These beautiful chanted prayers help us to receive inspiration and increase peace throughout the world. By drawing close to the enlightened beings we develop a calm, balanced mind and awaken our own potential for enlightenment.

We hold regular chanted prayers meditations at Akshobya Kadampa Buddhist Centre. Prayers are chanted in English. Our prayer sessions are free and everyone is welcome to attend.

Tara Prayers

For the welfare of the world

On the 8th of the month (50 minutes)
Please check our calendar for the time.

At Kadampa Centres worldwide, the eighth of the month is Tara Day. Tara is a female Buddha whose name means “Rescuer.” She is the embodiment of swift wisdom. If we rely upon Tara sincerely and with strong faith, she will protect us from all obstacles and fulfill all our wishes.

The prayer booklet, Liberation from Sorrow, is available from Tharpa Publications.

Heart Jewel with Lamrim meditation

Prayers for wisdom, compassion and spiritual protection

Wednesdays and Thursdays (guided meditation – Thurs only) at 5:00pm and Fridays 10am (1 hour).
Please check our calendar in case of cancellations

Heart Jewel includes two practices: Prayers to our Spiritual Guide visualized as the wisdom Buddha, Je Tsongkhapa, during which we purify negativity, accumulate merit and receive blessings. There are 2 pauses for silent meditation: 15 minutes for Lamrim meditation and 5 minutes for receiving the Guru’s blessings.

The second part of this practice contains prayers to the wisdom Buddha and Dharma Protector, Dorje Shugden, to help us overcome obstacles to our practice.

By relying upon this practice, we will naturally gain authentic, heart-felt experience of our meditations, and in particular we will attain a very special Dharma wisdom.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Heart Jewel. You can find Lamrim meditations in The New Meditation Handbook also from Tharpa Publications.

Wishfulfilling Jewel with Lamrim meditation

Wednesday mornings at 10am (1 hour).
Please check our calendar in case of cancellations.

This practice is similar to Heart Jewel; however, the prayers are more extensive and the first pause for meditation is shorter.

These prayers are essential for creating a strong Dharma practice and a strong Dharma community.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Wishfulfilling Jewel.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide

Offering to the Spiritual Guide

Prayers to our spiritual guide

On the 10th and 25th of the month (1.5 hours)
Times are on our calendar.

The practice of relying upon a Spiritual Guide, or ‘Guru Yoga’, is the root of the spiritual path and the foundation of all spiritual attainments.

Offering to the Spiritual Guide is a special Guru Yoga of Je Tsongkhapa. The main practice is developing a special view of our Spiritual Guide as the wisdom Buddha Je Tsongkhapa, and making offerings, praises and requests to him. Because Je Tsongkhapa has qualities of compassion, wisdom and spiritual power, by relying upon him these same qualities in us naturally increase.

This practice includes beautiful and inspiring verses on the stages of the path (Lamrim), training the mind (Lojong), and the generation and completion stages of Highest Yoga Tantra. It also includes a tsog offering – offerings of food and drink that are enjoyed by everyone after the prayers.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Offering to the Spiritual Guide.

Wishfulfilling Jewel with Tsog

Prayers for wisdom, compassion and spiritual protection

Tuesdays 5:00 – 6:00pm.

This practice is similar to Heart Jewel except that instead of a 15-minute meditation we make a tsog offering, an offering of food and drink to the enlightened beings, enjoyed by everyone after the prayers.

These prayers are essential for creating a strong Dharma practice and a strong Dharma community.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Wishfulfilling Jewel.

Prayers for Developing Compassion

This is not presently on our calendar.

Please check our calendar.
(45 minutes in length)

Avalokiteshvara is an enlightened being who is a manifestation of all Buddhas’ compassion. By relying sincerely on Avalokiteshvara, the Buddha of Compassion, and reciting his mantra with strong faith, temporarily we will improve our realizations of all the stages of the path, especially our realization of great compassion, and ultimately we will attain supreme Buddhahood in Avalokiteshvara’s Pure Land. This prayer booklet focuses on the Four-armed aspect of Avalokiteshvara. It is very blessed; the main body was composed by the great Tibetan Yogi Drubchen Tangtong Gyalpo, with additional prayers added by Geshe Kelsang Gyatso.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Powa Ceremony.

Melodious Drum

Melodious Drum and Wishfulfilling Jewel Prayers

Prayers for wisdom, compassion and spiritual protection

This is an extensive practice and is 3.5 hours.  Please check our calendar.

Dorje Shugden always helps, guides, and protects pure and faithful practitioners by granting blessings, increasing their wisdom, fulfilling their positive wishes, and bestowing success on all their virtuous activities. This extensive sadhana—ritual prayers for spiritual attainments—is called “Kangso” in Tibetan, which means “Fulfilling and Restoring Ritual.” Usually performed once a month in Dharma Centers, it is used for fulfilling our heart commitment to practice Lamrim, Lojong, and Mahamudra and to rely on the Dharma Protector Dorje Shugden, regarding him as inseparable from our Spiritual Guide and Buddha, and for restoring any degenerate or broken commitments we may have incurred. Also included are Praise to Manjushri, the Guru yoga of Je Tsongkhapa, self-generation as Heruka, and the ritual for fulfilling and restoring our commitments with other Dharma Protectors.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Wishfulfilling Jewel.

Powa Ceremony

Prayers for those who have recently died

Once a month,  (45 minutes)

You’ll the find the date and time on our calendar.

Every month we hold a special ceremony for all those who have recently died, including animals and insects. It is a traditional Buddhist practice of “Powa” or transference of consciousness, whereby we pray for the consciousness of the deceased to be transferred to Avalokiteshvara’s Pure Land, or heaven.

The prayer booklet available from Tharpa Publications is called Powa Ceremony.
